Our Story
A week before one of MIT's largest hackathons, MakeMIT, Emily visited the city of Calgary. Calgary has taken the sustainable moves of introducing curbside composting and downsizing landfill pickup, but its citizens often face issues complying with the new system. Emily shared with her hackathon team how green cities like Calgary and Cambridge are facing issues teaching households, especially children, to recycle and compost properly with their new systems.
After 19 hours of hacking, our first prototype of BinBot placed third in the hackathon and won the Microsoft and Verizon sponsor awards for Best Use of Microsoft Technology and Best Use of Data Science. BinBot had been born.
Now, after personal invitations to present our idea at MIT's Innovation World's Fair and compete in Microsoft's Imagine Cup, we are continuing our work in the summer cohort of MIT's Sandbox Innovation Fund Program.
